The Ilarun (pronounced roughly ee-la-roon), or African Precision Parting Comb, is a traditionally used, multi-pronged tool fundamental to West African hair styling. Its name in the Yoruba language of Nigeria literally means "hair cutter/sectioner," highlighting its primary function.
Unlike standard styling combs, the Ilarun features two to five thin, sturdy, widely spaced prongs (or "tails") often ending in sharp, pointed tips.
Key Features & Traditional Use
- Precision Parting: The sharp, narrow tips are designed to effortlessly section and create ultra-straight, defined parts for braids, cornrows, twists, and other intricate protective styles, even on dense, highly-textured hair.
- Protective Style Take-Down: It is the ideal tool for safely and quickly unraveling and taking down braids and twists without snagging, pulling, or causing breakage to the hair.
- Volume and Styling: The wide spacing between the prongs makes it effective for lifting hair at the roots to add volume and achieve the desired shape for Afros and natural styles.
- Authentic Material: Traditionally, Ilarun combs are handcrafted from durable wood (like Ebony or other hardwoods) for a smooth, static-free glide, though modern versions may be made from sturdy plastic.
